You’ve landed in London and you’re ready to get your explorer hat on before your course begins. But London can be a little pricey, so it’s hard to find fun yet affordable things to do. We’re going to let you in on a secret: there’s plenty to do while you’re studying in London; you just have to know where to go.

Instead of keeping the goods to ourselves, we’re willing to share them with you. Here’s our list of top 10 activities to keep you busy during your time as a student in this wonderful city.

1. Do a bus tour

When you’re trying to find things to do in London, we recommend a bus tour to help you get your bearings. Bus tours are the quickest way to absorb the information you need to know about a city. Your guide will show you round all the popular tourist spots, and you’ll leave with a whole list of fun places you want to visit. They can be a little on the pricey side – especially the official ‘Hop on, Hop off’ tours  but a clever person over at the Spot a Home blog has put together a make your own bus tour  guide, which means you can get a tour of the city for no more than a regular bus ticket.

2. Visit free museums and galleries

There are a whole bunch of free museums and galleries across London, so if you’re ready to get cultured, here are a few to choose from:

• Tate Modern
• Tate Britain
• The Science Museum
• The National Gallery
• The National History Museum
• The Victoria and Albert Museum 

Go and soak up free knowledge, history and art so you can get to know Britain a little better.

3. Go ape at London Zoo

You haven’t really been to a zoo if you haven’t been to London Zoo. We might be a little biased, but we think it’s one of the best zoos in the world.

With a Gorilla Kingdom, a Land of the Lions, Penguins Beach and London’s only living rainforest – it’s a trip you won’t forget.

Entry costs change depending on the time of year, but ticket prices start at £23.40.

4. Relax in our parks

If you’re looking for free things to do in London, you’ll want to check out the city’s stunning parks. Open to visitors all year round, the most famous ones are the eight Royal Parks. In Regent’s Park, you’ll be able to hear the animals from London Zoo. And in the summer, some of these parks host festivals let you hire boats, and even have swimming pools that are open to the public.

5. Go crazy in London markets

You can’t study in this wonderful city without going to visit some its most famous markets. It’s hard to find cheap things to do in London; after all, it’s an expensive city.  But one thing you can do is head over to any one of the city’s markets.

From Camden Market to Columbia Road Flower Market, Borough Market to Brick Lane Market, you’ll find everything from cheap food and furniture, to cheap flowers and fashion. Perfect when you’re a student on a budget.

6. Explore the West End

The West End is the city’s centre of entertainment, theatre, shopping and restaurants. It’s also home to some of London’s most famous neighborhoods – including Piccadilly, Trafalgar Square, Soho, St James’s, Mayfair, Covent Garden, Parliament Square and Knightsbridge. Go see a play, eat your way through Chinatown or shop till you drop. Whatever, you decide to do, prepare yourself for some serious fun.

7. Check out the London Eye

It’s almost a binding obligation that you go on the London Eye when you’re living in London. And if you’re scared of heights, you at least have to stand beside it and look up in awe. The observation wheel was built on the bank of the River Thames in 1999, and ever since it’s been a solid tourist attraction. From the top, it gives you a panoramic view of London for 25 kilometers in every direction.

Tickets are a little pricey at £30 an adult, but you can save a few pounds by booking online in advance.

8. Travel on an Emirates Cable Car

If the London Eye isn’t enough for you, enjoy a round trip on Emirates Cable Car 90 metres above the River Thames.

Tickets start at just £7, and you’ll get to see some of London’s most popular attractions from new heights.

9. Visit royalty at Buckingham Palace

Are you a secret royalist? Well then Buckingham Palace is a must. During certain times of the year, it’s even open to visitors so you’ll be able to go inside and see how the Royal family live. While you’re there, watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony and prepare to be stunned.

10. Be a wizard for a day

One cool thing to do in London (assuming you’re a Harry Potter fan) is to go on the Harry Potter Walking Tour.

You’ll get to explore the real Diagon Alley, see the sets, props, and costumes, and visit the Gryffindor common room. For just £12, who wouldn’t want to see Muggle London through the eyes of a wizard?
