Australia student visa requirements

You can apply for your study permit online from the Citizenship and Immigration Australia (CIC) website. An offline option is also available but will take twice as long to process as an online application.

Australian student visas are awarded on a points-based system. You’ll need to provide the following information in order to meet all of the requirements.

  • Passport details
  • A recent photograph
  • An unconditional offer of a place on a course by a licensed Tier 4 Sponsor.
  • Proof of English language skills
  • Proof of financial support for the duration of your stay in Australia

You can read full guidance details on the application process here. The earliest you can apply for your visa is 3 months before the start of your course. It’s recommended that you check the estimated processing time for your country to ensure you leave enough time to apply.

Some evidence you will need to provide includes:

  • Proof of your acceptance onto an approved course in Australia
  • Proof of Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) if required
  • Evidence of AUS$20,290 per year for living expenses

Student Culture in Australia

Its reputation as being one of the world’s sunniest countries as well as breathtaking beaches, mountains, and deserts, Australia has long been a popular destination for international students despite its remote location.

Boasting a very multi-cultural society with Aboriginal, Asian and British influences, whether you decide to study in the big cities such as Sydney or Melbourne or somewhere more off the beaten track will have a big influence on your experience of Australia.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FUNDING

Scholarships available through the Australian government

Both full and partially-funded scholarships are available in Australia. As well as scholarships offered by individual universities, there are also schemes that are offered by the Australian government as well as private organizations.

Some examples are:

Australia Awards – they offer prestigious scholarships and fellowships to the next generation of global leaders.

Destination Australia – providing financial support for those studying in regional Australia.

Student Accommodation in the Australia

There are plenty of accommodation choices available to you whilst studying in Australia but, unlike other countries, there is very little accommodation provided by the university, meaning that most students will live off-campus in shared rental properties, homestays, or hostels.

Most universities will encourage international students to arrive in Australia 2-3 weeks before their course starts in order to get settled.

Australia has a relatively high cost of living, although the wages are quite high. You can expect your living expenses to be on average AU$20,000 per year.

Food

The Australian’s are famed for loving food that suits their laid-back lifestyle and so probably the best way to sample the local culture is to head to the beach or to a famous Australian barbecue.

  • Chicken Parmigiana
  • Barbecued Snags (Sausages)
  • Pavlova
  • Chiko Roll
  • Meat Pie
  • Vegemite
  • Anzac biscuit

Average monthly costs in Australia might look something like this:

  • Accommodation: AU$650 (Melbourne could be as much as AU$1500)
  • Utility bills: AU$100
  • Mobile Phone: AU$30
  • Broadband internet: AU$50
  • Study materials: AU$80
  • Travel: AU$150

  • Typical night out: AU$40
  • Cinema ticket: AU$15

Work and Study in Australia

Once your course has started, you will be permitted to work 20 hours per week during term time, with no limit on the number of hours you may work during official university holidays. Any work you need to carry out as part of your degree does not count towards the 20-hour limit, but any voluntary or unpaid work will count.

You can receive permission to work at the same time as your student visa, there is no need to apply separately

Manners and Behavior

Known for their friendliness and laid-back attitude, Australians are sociable, informal, and sporty. They are confident in voicing their opinions, sometimes very direct in their approach, and embrace the freedom of speech, sexuality, and religion which is enjoyed in the country.

Most Australians are fun-loving, employing a sharp, sarcastic sense of humor and a lot of slang!
